Premier League stance on potential Covid-19 break suggested

Premier League chiefs are determined not to stop the 2020/21 season despite clubs discussing the possibility of a two-week break amid rises in coronavirus cases.

That's according to Mirror Football, who say league bosses 'have no intention of suspending the season' despite the spike in cases in the top tier.

The Premier League announced 18 positive tests in the week between Monday, December 21 and Sunday, December 27.

Several clubs have since discussed the possibility of a two-week temporary break but the Premier League remains focused on continuing amid the pandemic.

The UK Government is also said to have reassured that there are no plans to stop Premier League action or elite sport despite the rise in coronavirus cases.

According to The Telegraph, though, the rise in cases has seen Premier League chairmen now informally discussing the prospect of a two-week break in January to combat further outbreaks, something which would impact Everton and Liverpool.

In what is already a truncated season due to March’s shutdown causing a delayed start to this campaign, there will be plenty of debate over how a two-week shutdown can be achieved without putting further pressure on players ahead of the Euros at the end of the season.

But after Man City were forced to call off their game against Everton on Monday due to an outbreak of the virus that has also shut the club’s training ground, Sheffield United became the latest club to confirm numerous positive tests among its club staff.

Whilst the Blades’ game against Burnley still went ahead, the news is indicative of a rise in cases in the Premier League.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl missed his side’s game against West Ham after a member of his household tested positive and there have been doubts that Fulham vs Tottenham will go ahead this evening.
