Premier League solution to Mohamed Salah and Phil Foden joint man of the match award

Gary Neville raised eyebrows during Liverpool and Manchester City's thrilling 2-2 draw by nominating two players as man of the match in the dying seconds.

The co-commentator named goalscorers Phil Foden and Mohamed Salah as joint recipients of the award in an unprecedented move.

Neville could not pick between the two players after they scored brilliant goals for their teams. Foden rifled into the bottom corner with exquisite accuracy to bring City level after Sadio Mane's opener.

Salah, who assisted Mane's goal, then restored Liverpool's lead with a stunning finish after a world-class dribble through a wall of sky blues shirts in the penalty area.

While both players were worthy winners of the man of the match award, Neville's decision caused a stir among fans on social media.

It also raised questions of how the Premier League will distribute the prize, which is usually sent to the recipient's club for them to pass on.

As reported by The Athletic , top-flight chiefs will honour Neville's wishes by sending separate awards to Liverpool and City for them to distribute to Salah and Foden respectively.

Salah's latest man of the match award will take its place on a shelf already jam-packed full of individual honours.

The Egyptian forward won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, sharing the latter with teammate Mane and Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The 29-year-old also won the Player of the Season award during his debut campaign after arriving from Roma in 2017, and he has been named Player of the Month on three occasions.

Salah has strong claims to win yet more individual honours this term after starting in electric form with six goals and three assists in seven top-flight appearances.

Foden, meanwhile, is still in the early stages of his career but the 21-year-old scooped the prestigious Young Player of the Season award last campaign.

The attacking midfielder is still getting up to speed after missing the start of the current season with a foot injury and appears to be getting back to his best form with two goals and two assists in all competitions since returning to action in mid-September.

"Phil is a special player we know it," said City boss Guardiola after the draw at Anfield. "He came back from the national team injured, he is a fantastic player - but not just him, everyone was fantastic."

Foden's fellow man of the match drew lavish praise from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said: "If Leo Messi for Cristiano Ronaldo score that goal then the world says yes because it's world class.

"He (Salah) is one of the best players in the world, that's how it is."
