Premier League slam 'actions of a minority' as Manchester United against Liverpool postponed

The Premier League have slammed the "actions of a minority" after taking the decision to call off Liverpool's visit to Manchester United.

With the game set to get underway at 4.30pm on Sunday, the initial kick-off was delayed after fans stormed into Old Trafford in protest at the United owners, the Glazer family, and their attempts to engineer the club's involvement in the Super League.

Although largely a peaceful protest, some supporters damaged television equipment of Sky Sports before a flare was reportedly aimed in the direction of the analysts on duty at the stadium.

The league said they understood and respected the strength of feeling from the United followers over their club's owners but said the acts of a select few had "no justification".

Liverpool's team bus remained parked at the hotel where Jurgen Klopp and his players stayed on Saturday night as police ushered the protesters away from the area.

The game was eventually called off at around 5.30pm with a statement dropping from the governing body.

A Premier League statement read: "Following the security breach at Old Trafford, the Manchester United vs. Liverpool game has been postponed.

"This is a collective decision from the police, both clubs, the Premier League and local authorities.

*Where should football go next after Super League fallout? Take our quick survey.

"The security and safety of everyone at Old Trafford remains of paramount importance.

"We understand and respect the strength of feeling but condemn all acts of violence, criminal damage and trespass, especially given the associated COVID-19 breaches.

"Fans have many channels by which to make their views known, but the actions of a minority seen today have no justification.

"We sympathise with the police and stewards who had to deal with a dangerous situation that should have no place in football.

"The rearrangement of the fixture will be communicated in due course."

It is unclear when the game will take place at this stage.
