Premier League set to make two key VAR changes that will affect Manchester United and Man City next season

Two changes to the much-maligned VAR system are set to be introduced by the Premier League this coming season.

Manchester City and Manchester United are among the top-flight clubs to have encountered problems since video technology was first introduced to the English top-flight two years ago.

However, following a season of controversial decisions last term, football fans generally applauded how VAR was utilised throughout Euro 2020 during the summer.

Decisions were made more quickly, and without the lengthy replays that generally infuriated spectators, thanks to Uefa appointing twice as many officials per game, with at least one top level referee from one of Europe's top five leagues whose sole responsibility was to check offsides.

Of course, that won't be the case in the Premier League next season, due to there being a lack of qualified officials to carry out such diligence.

According to a report from VAR expert Dale Johnson on ESPN, there will be an updated level of tolerance when it comes to flag decisions.

If the on-screen image does not provide a conclusive result, then the on-field decision will stand - which, it is hoped, will reduce the number of contentious calls.

In the same ESPN report, it adds that supporters will no longer be subjected to the process by which the lines are marked on the screen to judge offside calls, an unpopular feature of the VAR system in England.
