Premier League season must finish so Liverpool can end title hoodoo, says Gerard Houllier

Former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is desperate for the season to resume so that his old club can finally bring an end to their Premier League hoodoo.

It is 30 years since the Reds last brought the league championship back to Anfield - a drought that began two seasons prior to the top-flight's famous rebrand.

It looked like the Merseyside club's wait would finally be ended this term after Jurgen Klopp's men built up a 25-point lead at the summit to move within two wins of success.

However, the coronavirus pandemic has put that outcome in doubt, much to Houllier's dismay.

The Frenchman, who won six trophies in as many years in the dugout at Anfield, says he would be 'very disappointed' if 2019-20 ended up being another near-miss.

“I hope they will restart the competition, because Liverpool are just two wins away from a very long-awaited and deserved title,” he told talkSPORT.

"I would be very disappointed if the season ends now.

“Too many times have Liverpool finished second, so now they really deserve it – even last year they finished with 97 points with one defeat.”

It looks increasingly likely that the season will resume without fans in attendance as the government looks to avoid a second wave of Covid-19 deaths.

That, too, will bring its own measure of disappointment for supporters who have waited so long to see the title, Houllier believes.

“Even if we play games behind closed doors, there will be great frustration for Liverpool fans,” he added.

“But I can’t see them not being out in the street anyway just waiting for the players, so maybe it’s better to let them in the stadium.”
