Liverpool and Spurs climbed in 2020 richest club rankings before Covid pandemic

Money and success aren't mutually exclusive - just ask Leicester City.

But it certainly helps compete with the big boys if you are indeed yourself a big boy.

The Premier League is the richest division in the world, and it's competitive at the very top of the table with historically big clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool up against new-money sides like Manchester City and Chelsea.

Each year KPMG publishes a valuation report ranking the 32 most prominent football clubs based on their Enterprise Value.

The figures for 2020, which were published in January, before the coronavirus pandemic caused huge financial uncertainty across the world, showed that Real Madrid were the richest football club on the planet with a net worth of £2.95bn - a rise of 1.5 per cent from last season.

Manchester United were the richest club in the Premier League, and came in second behind Real Madrid, with a net worth of £2.84bn.

Barcelona were the third richest club in Europe, with Bayern Munich fourth and Paris Saint-Germain all the way down in ninth.

The rest of the top ten were made up of five Premier League teams.

* It is important to note that the values from January 2020 so not take into account the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As state on KPMG's website: "The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the world of football, causing an unprecedented complexity of logistical, financial and legal issues and dilemmas for the European football ecosystem. Club values have been certainly affected, too, however, the immediate impact cannot yet be quantified."

The next report is due around May 2021.
