Premier League's all-time record scorer Alan Shearer explains why Sergio Aguero is better than Thierry Henry

Alan Shearer has explained his decision to select Sergio Aguero instead of Thierry Henry in his list of the ten greatest goal-scorers in Premier League history.

With 260 Premier League goals, Shearer is the highest scorer ever in the competition, while Manchester City’s Aguero is in fourth place with 180 and ex-Arsenal striker Henry is in sixth with 175.

Aguero has been prolific so far this season and a hat-trick at Aston Villa in January saw him surpass Henry as the foreign player with the most goals in the Premier League. That treble, Aguero’s 12th in the league, also saw the Argentine international overtake Shearer’s record for most hat-tricks.

Fellow Premier League striking legends Ian Wright and Gary Lineker placed Henry ahead of Aguero, but Shearer had the 31-year-old in second place, behind only himself.

“Aguero is now coming up to his 32nd birthday and he’s still banging in the goals left, right and centre,” Shearer explained.

“I know he’s playing in a magnificent team, but 180-odd goals, 260 appearances and look what he’s won also.

“I love both of them, Thierry was different. The role now as a forward has slightly changed.

“There’s not so much centre-forward now – it’s a forward, but the one constant is you have to score goals and both of them are not only great goal-scorers but scorers of great goals.”
