Premier League's all-time Argentine XI after Angel Di Maria saga - including two Man Utd stars

As the dust settles following Angel Di Maria's wife's verbal assault on the city of Manchester, Mirror Sport has taken a look at the Argentines who fared better in the Premier League.

Di Maria's £59.7million move to Manchester United in 2014 is the second largest fee paid for an Argentinian - but the winger scored only four goals in 32 appearances.

And there is no love lost between Di Maria's wife the city the pair used to call home, with Jorgelina Cardoso claiming: "The people were all skinny, neat, weird. You are walking and you don't know if they are going to kill you or not."

Her comments prompted backlash from United great Gary Neville, who highlighted Di Maria's dreadful season at Old Trafford and said he "played like a drain".

But despite the Paris Saint-Germain star's ill-fated season in England, the Premier League has played host to some fantastic Argentinian talents.

And Mirror Sport has assembled the ultimate XI of Argentinians to have played in the top-flight...

Goalkeeper: Julian Speroni, 93 appearances

A Crystal Palace great, Speroni was a loyal servant at Selhurst Park for 15 years.

The former Dundee man stayed with the Eagles through relegation and losing his place as no. 1 to help the club re-establish itself in the top-flight in the 2013/14 season.

Despite slipping down the pecking order to third-choice shot-stopper during the latter stages of his Palace career, Speroni was always on hand to fill in where needed and made 93 Premier League appearances before being released last year.

Honourable mentions include fellow back-up 'keepers Sergio Romero and Willy Caballero.

Right-back: Pablo Zabaleta, 303 appearances

Zabaleta is one of the best and most successful Argentines in Premier League history.

The versatile full-back spent nine years with Manchester City and won five major honours before joining West Ham United in 2017.

The 35-year-old joined City just before the uncertainty of their 2008 takeover but outlasted his competition to become the defining right-back of the club's first decade under new ownership.

With the Irons, Zabaleta is a consistent performer but his contract runs out this summer and he admitted recently that he would like to play in Italy before retiring.

Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi, 131 appearances

Otamendi has become an increasingly inconsistent figure at the heart of City's defence - but no-one can question his achievements in English football.

The 32-year-old moved to the Etihad Stadium in 2015 and has won a remarkable seven major honours since - including the domestic treble last season.

The centre-half also played a key role as the Sky Blues became the first team to win a century of points in their dominant 2017/18 season.

Though he has fallen down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola, Otamendi remains a defensive stalwart and an attacking threat from set pieces.

Centre-back: Fabricio Coloccini, 211 appearances

Coloccini is fondly remembered in Newcastle for his eight years of service to the club.

The non-nonsense defender joined from Deportivo La Coruna in 2008 for £10.8million and was awarded with captaincy three years later.

Now with Argentine club San Lorenzo, Coloccini was even compared to Bobby Moore by Alan Pardew and earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year in 2012.

Left-back: Gabriel Heinze, 52 appearances

Heinze joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2004 and made an instant impact at Old Trafford by winning the club's player of the year award.

His time with the Red Devils was impacted by injury but he proved a reliable performer either on the left or in the middle of the defence.

Heinze, who now coaches, won the Premier League in the 2006/07 season but grew frustrated by his lack of game time and even tried to force a move to rivals Liverpool.

He ended up joining Real Madrid and won La Liga back-to-back with the Premier League.

Right midfield: Erik Lamela, 146 appearances

Lamela joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2013 as the club quickly spent the money they made from selling Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

But unlike flops Roberto Soldado and Paulinho, Lamela has proved his worth with the north London club.

Mauricio Pochettino seemed to know how to get the best out of his fellow Argentine, though he has struggled with injuries since joining from Roma for £25.8million.

Under new boss Jose Mourinho, Lamela has continued to play an important role in the absence of injured forward duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Central midfield: Jonas Gutierrez, 154 appearances

Gutierrez joined the Magpies in 2008 and won the Championship in 2010 before spending five years in the Premier League.

Though his time at St James' Park is remembered for his diagnosis with and recovery from testicular cancer, the natural left midfielder was a technically gifted player in his own right.

Famously, then-Argentina coach Diego Maradona claimed setting up the national team was a matter of selecting Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, Gutierrez and eight other players.

Able to operate across the midfield, the former Mallorca man takes his place in the middle of the park.

Gutierrez was released from Newcastle in bad taste by the club in 2015 - but he remains a favourite among fans.

Central midfield: Javier Mascherano, 99 appearances

Although Mascherano's surprise transfer to West Ham United in 2006 was underwhelming, the midfield enforcer shone during his two-and-a-half years with Liverpool.

Mascherano formed a formidable partnership with Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Momo Sissoko and finished as runner-up in the Champions League in 2007 and the Premier League in 2009.

He then earned a £20m transfer to Barcelona in 2010 and was moulded into a world-class centre-back under Pep Guardiola.

Left midfield: Maxi Rodriguez, 57 appearances

Another Liverpool man, Rodriguez struggled for consistency during his 18 months with Liverpool but showed glimpses of his class.

He joined from Atletico Madrid on a free transfer and scored 15 league goals for the Reds before returning to Argentina in the summer of 2012.

But Rodriguez is remembered fondly at Anfield for his electric hat-tricks against Birmingham City and Fulham and he earns his place on the left flank of our XI.

Striker: Carlos Tevez, 202 appearances

The first of the big-hitters up front is former West Ham, Manchester United and Manchester City man Tevez.

He made a name for himself with the Irons by scoring to keep them in the Premier League on the final day of the 2006/07 season.

The mercurial forward scored a total of 84 goals during his seven years in England and won three Premier League trophies - the first two with United before his shock move to City.

Tevez also won the golden boot in 2011 and is arguably one of the most tireless and versatile forwards of the Premier League era.

Striker: Sergio Aguero, 261 appearances

Tevez's striker partner in our ultimate XI needs no introduction.

Aguero has been one of the top forwards not just in England but in Europe over the last decade thanks to his prolific scoring ability.

His tally of 180 goals has spearheaded Manchester City to four Premier League titles, the FA cup and five League Cups.

The 31-year-old has made two appearances in the PFA Team of the Year and won the Premier League Player of the Month award seven times.

He has continued to wreak havoc on top-flight defences this season, scoring 16 goals in 22 appearances.
