Premier League rule change set to expel clubs who try to join Super League

The Premier League will reportedly bring in new rules to ensure that any team who attempt to join a Super League in the future will be immediately expelled from the competition.

Football was rocked earlier this week after 12 clubs, including six from England, announced they had agreed to form part of a new European Super League masterminded by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

However, after a fierce backlash the plans have fallen apart, and Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have now all withdrawn from the tournament.

It remains to be seen what punishment the rebels will face, with some calling for heavy fines and potentially a points deduction.

And according to The Times the Premier League have acted quickly to look at changing its legislation to make sure they are prepared for the threat of something similar happening in the future.

They claim that a new rule will spell out in black and white that joining any outside competition without permission from now on will lead to that club immediately being thrown out of England's top flight.

And a source told the publication: "This will kill off the threat of English clubs joining a European Super League for ever."

Many feel that the failure of the European Super League will see the elite teams lose a huge amount of the power they thought they had, and this could be a massive moment of transition for football around the continent.

A number of the owners of the English clubs involved are now coming under pressure to sell, and there have been big protests outside the stadiums of most of the teams.

Arsenal supporters are planning to make their feelings clear outside the Emirates Stadium tomorrow ahead of their game against Everton, with hundreds expected to demand that the Kroenke family sell up as soon as possible.

And there may well be more protests come, with the Carabao Cup final between City and Spurs on Sunday likely to see some anger before kick-off.
