Premier League rivals call for 'emergency meeting' after fury at Newcastle takeover

Newcastle United's Premier League rivals have reportedly called for an emergency meeting to express their anger at the Magpies takeover.

United's protracted takeover saga finally came to a conclusion on Thursday when the consortium backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund were confirmed as the club's new owners.

Thousands of jubilant supporters gathered outside St James' Park to celebrate the end of Mike Ashley's turbulent 14-year tenure which had seen apathy grip the fanbase.

Part owner Amanda Staveley outlined the consortium's ambition to invest in the club and the city, while looking to challenge for a Premier League title within a decade.

Following months of silence and a lack of transparency, the takeover which many assumed lay dormant sprung into life and was approved in a matter of days.

It was a sudden turn of events which caught even the most optimistic Newcastle fans by surprise, but one that has not been welcomed by their top-flight rivals.

The Guardian report the other 19 Premier League clubs are 'united in opposition' to the approval of the takeover, and are determined to learn of the change of circumstances which allowed it to be passed.

The title adds it is a plea which shows 'how high feelings are running', and claim chief executive Richard Masters and chairman Gary Hoffman have received complaints from furious clubs as a result.
