Premier League return shock as government chief hints at quick-fire comeback

The English Premier League could be set for a quick-fire return despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic across the globe.

Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Oliver Dowden made the shock announcement on Monday hours after Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted there would be no shortcuts taken over the UK's exit coronavirus strategy.

Reports EPL chiefs want the return of the richest league in the world have been dubbed 'Project Restart' and the revelation from government will only intensify with a June 8 date mooted.

Dowden said: “I personally have been in talks with the Premier League with a view to getting football up and running as soon as possible in order to support the whole football community.”

Runaway leaders Liverpool are only two games away from glory but there is still plenty to play for in terms of a top four finish and relegation.

A decision to resume the season in England's top flight could have a knock-on effect elsewhere with many leagues across Europe readying their next move with the Eredivisie calling time on their season.

Scottish football has ended the three league below the Premiership with Celtic skipper Scott Brown insisting over the weekend his side want to earn a ninth title on the pitch.

But the desire for the richest league in the world to return has been high on the agenda with matches set to take place behind doors.

And that is set to remain for the foreseeable future with social distancing to stay in effect for the rest of 2020.
