Premier League return date set as Manchester City vs Arsenal kicks off 'Project Restart'

The Premier League is set to return on June 20, with Manchester City vs Arsenal as the curtain-raiser three days earlier.

Football across Europe has been shut down since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the SPFL season declared over on a points-per-game basis.

The French, Dutch and Belgian top flights have also been called to a halt, but the Premier League always intended to return.

Germany's Bundesliga is already back in action, while La Liga will be back from June 8.

Now the Telegraph reports that all 20 clubs have unanimously agreed to resume the action on June 20 - though some games will be played three days earlier.

Manchester City and Aston Villa had matches postponed due to the League Cup final.

As a result, Pep Guardiola's side will face Arsenal on June 17 while Villa take on Sheffield United.

Another Premier League game may be played on Friday June 19 but the full round of fixtures will start on Saturday June 20.

The Premier League hope to complete the season by the first weekend in August, with the FA Cup final to be played the weekend after.
