Premier League restart date to be scrapped as Newcastle United and Co wait

Newcastle United and their Premier League counterparts are expecting the restart date for top-flight action to changed.

An April 30 return was announced last week but this is now set to be pushed further back according to sources in the capital.

Premier League chiefs are holding meetings to establish when a feasible slot will arise.

But with government officials urging the public to stay in lockdown for potentially 12 weeks, this would mean the season could spill into June or July.

The issue of the start of the 2020/21 season would then come into play with many observers believing that this will be September of October if all games are to be completed and the season is not declared null and void.

That has been the case for the non-league season today with South Shields denied the chance of promotion and Gateshead's play-off hopes wiped out in their respective divisions.

Steve Bruce has offered his views on the situation today and told the Telegraph: “It’s not ideal, but if we can play 10 to 15 games in December and the start of January, we can do it to get this season finished.

“It probably means the start of next season will be delayed, we’ll probably have to scrap one of the cup competitions and do without a winter break, but it can be done. Whatever, however, we will find a way.”
