Premier League restart date agreed as Man City vs Arsenal and Aston Villa vs Sheffield United games to be played first

Premier League clubs have agreed for the 2019/20 season to restart in June, bosses have revealed.

The top-flight campaign was postponed in March as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, all 20 clubs resumed training on May 18 as part of the Project Restart process.

On Wednesday, Premier League sides unanimously voted in favour of returning to contact training in line with government guidelines.

And top-flight teams have agreed to restart the current campaign in full on June 20, although two fixtures will be held three days earlier.

Manchester City v Arsenal and Aston Villa v Sheffield United will take place on June 17 in a bid to ensure all clubs will have played 29 matches going into the weekend of June 20.

Clubs will then aim to play out the remaining fixtures of the season over the course of the summer.

A Premier League statement read: "Premier League shareholders today agreed to a new provisional restart date for the 2019/20 season of Wednesday 17 June, provided that all safety requirements are in place."

The news comes as a boost to Championship sides including Swansea City and Cardiff City who are hopeful of the second tier season being concluded.

The Bluebirds and the Swans were given the green light by the Welsh government to resume training earlier this week and look set to return to full contact training on Monday.
