Premier League respond to claim coronavirus could stop Liverpool emulating Arsenal Invincibles

The Premier League have responded to claims that there is 'no guarantee' Liverpool would win the title if the season is cut short as they attempt to emulate Arsenal's Invincibles.

Arsenal are the only team to have gone unbeaten in a Premier League campaign and that happened during the 2003/04 season under Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners won 26 games and drew 12 that season but Liverpool have already equalled the same matches won in just 27 league contests.

Liverpool are 22 points clear at the top of the table ahead of the weekend and it seems only something quite extraordinary could stop them.

Arteta believes Aubameyang doesn't need titles to be considered world-class

The coronavirus is something certainly out of the ordinary as it continues to spread across the globe.

More than 2,700 people have died since the outbreak in China, which has now spread into Europe and seen matches in Italy's Serie A postponed.

Clubs in the Premier League are taking action to try and combat the spread of the virus, and Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has explained that his players have been banned from shaking hands.

But perhaps the most headline-grabbing claim in regards to the coronavirus on the Premier League has been The Telegraph reporting that there is 'no guarantee' Liverpool would be crowned Premier League champions if the season is stopped by the virus.

The Liverpool Echo have since contacted the Premier League for a response and they have confirmed that they will hold talks on what to do if the coronavirus cuts the season short.

The Swiss league, for instance, has postponed an array of upcoming fixtures as part of a national policy limiting events which could see more than 1000 people gather.

"It is understood that no rule in the Premier League Handbook prescribes what happens next should a campaign be brought to a premature end," the Echo report states.

Everything to do with the coronavirus and its potential impact on the Premier League is merely at a hypothetical stage at the moment.

The Premier League is continuing to take the latest advice from the Government.
