The Premier League have released an official statement asking fans to get behind their teams in “passionate, positive and respectful ways”.
The statement comes in the same week that Chelsea suspended four fans from attending matches indefinitely after they were caught on camera racially abusing Raheem Sterling in the club’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.
Chelsea supporters then came under further scrutiny on Thursday evening during the club’s away tie in Hungary against MOL Vidi where antisemitic chants were heard from the travelling support.
In the statement the Premier League said:
“Some brilliant football has been played this Premier League season and the vast majority of fans have generated exciting and passionate atmospheres in stadiums. However, there have been incidents recently where a very small minority have behaved unacceptably.
“As we head into the festive season, with matches coming thick and fast, we ask all supporters to get behind their teams in passionate, positive and respectful ways. Support for a club should never include excessive aggression or discrimination towards the opposition.
