Premier League relegation permutations as Aston Villa and Bournemouth face D-Day

Both Aston Villa and Bournemouth could be relegated from the Premier League on Tuesday evening, and the Cherries aren't even playing.

With Brighton securing their top-flight status with a goalless draw at home to Newcastle on Monday, 16th-placed West Ham are also all-but mathematically safe now.

David Moyes' Hammers sit six points above the drop zone ahead of their final two matches of the season away at Manchester United and at home to Villa, with their goal difference of -13 proving vastly superior to the teams around them.

That realistically leaves the relegation picture to be made up of two teams from Watford, Villa and Bournemouth, all of whom are scrapping to avoid joining Norwich in the Championship next season.

Having sacked manager Nigel Pearson on Sunday, Watford welcome Manchester City at 6pm on Tuesday evening knowing that if they were to win or draw then that would relegate Bournemouth without the Cherries even playing.

Their 2-0 defeat at home to Southampton on Sunday was a disastrous result for Eddie Howe's side, who are now three points adrift of safety and go to Everton on the final day.

Any positive Watford result against City would also put Aston Villa in a tough position ahead of them hosting Arsenal at Villa Park immediately after the match at Vicarage Road.

Should Watford win, then Villa would have to win in order to avoid the drop on Tuesday, as they would then be three points behind both the Hornets and West Ham going into their final game away to the Hammers. A draw or defeat to Arsenal would relegate them and make Watford and West Ham safe.

If Watford draw with City, then Villa simply can't afford to lose to Arsenal. A draw would keep them in contention but a defeat would relegate them. Either result would also make West Ham safe.

Should Watford lose to City then that gives Bournemouth a lifeline, and neither they or Villa will be relegated on Tuesday.

Villa will then have the chance to move level with Watford on 34 points if they can beat Arsenal, with the Hornets currently possessing a better goal difference (-23 to -27).
