Premier League release statement as one individual tests positive for COVID-19 in latest round of testing

The Premier League have confirmed that there has been one new positive coronavirus case in the latest round of testing.

Players and staff at top-flight clubs received their results on Wednesday after tests were carried out at training grounds up and down the country on Monday and Tuesday.

The individual who tested positive is currently self-isolating for seven days and cannot attend their club’s training ground as a result.

In total, 1,213 players and club staff were tested in the latest round and there have now been 13 positive cases since testing began at the beginning in May.

“The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 8 June and Tuesday 9 June, 1,213 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, one has tested positive,” a statement from the governing body rea.

“The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.”

The Premier League is set to return on June 17 after a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

All 92 remaining fixtures have been shared across the top-flight’s main broadcast partners: Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and the BBC.

Aston Villa vs Sheffield United will be the first game back before Man City welcome Arsenal to the Etihad just hours later.
