Premier League referees given new pitchside monitors advice

Premier League referees have been advised to use pitchside monitors.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited, who manage referees in English professional football, have announced the new position today.

The decision comes after a meeting earlier in the week to discuss the use of VAR in the Premier League, contrary to reports earlier this month that suggested there was to be no change in the advice to use the monitors ‘sparingly’.

It is thought that the new protocol was prompted by Michael Oliver’s decision to utilise the technology in the FA Cup third round game between Crystal Palace and Derby County.

Having reviewed the incident between Palace’s Luka Milivojevic and Derby’s Tom Huddlestone, Oliver, who had initially awarded Milivojevic a yellow card, sent the player off.

The move was widely praised by fans and pundits as Oliver asserted his control over decisions on the field, rather than delegating to his colleagues at Stockley Park.

This will bring the Premier League in line with UEFA guidance which has supported the use of the monitors, despite concerns over time delays in games.
