Premier League referees chief admits VAR mistakes including key West Ham decision

Referee’s chief Mike Riley has admitted that four mistakes have been made so far in the Premier League this season by VAR.

Introduced for the 2019/20 season, the technology has proven to be inconsistent during the first month of the season and there are already some calls for a restructure to be looked at.

On Thursday, Riley admitted at a meeting of Premier League shareholders than four mistakes have been made this season - highlighting key decisions in four matches, affecting a total of seven teams in the top-flight.

The news will be of particular interest to West Ham fans, as one of the examples highlighted was the decision not to award a penalty when Sebastian Haller was brought down in the box by Norwich City's Tom Trybull.

Another penalty call was also highlighted, when Manchester City's David Silva was stood on by Bournemouth's Jefferson Lerma, while the other errors provided as examples were Sebastian Schar's equaliser for Newcastle United against Watford and the decision not to send off Youri Tielemans for an apparent stamp on Bournemouth's Callum Wilson.

Riley told the shareholder's meeting that he had gathered his officials during the international break, where it was agreed that the decisions should have been overturned on review.

As a result, changes are afoot in the Premier League this weekend as the VAR team at Stockley Park will be expected to step in and tell the referee to change his decision should a similar incident occur.

However, the Premier League’s stance is still to avoid using the pitch-side monitors wherever possible as this leads to an extended delay - although that could still change in the future.
