Premier League 'reconsider neutral stadiums as up to 12 clubs oppose' Project Restart plans to finish season

Premier League clubs are ready to reconsider plans to finish the season using neutral stadiums, but require government approval to do so, according to reports.

Top-flight clubs met again on Monday to discuss 'Project Restart' following the government's latest lockdown measures on Sunday evening.

The Times report that the Premier League will now speak to the government over scrapping the use of neutral grounds, of which are understood to have numbered between eight and 10 from Brighton in the south to Old Trafford in the north, in favour of a traditional home and away format.

It is understood that clubs have previously been told that the remaining 92 matches of the season must be hosted by a restricted number of stadia due to health and safety reasons during the coronavirus pandemic.

On the same day that the government gave the green light for the Premier League and further elite sport in England to return in June , The Telegraph claims as many as 12 top-flight clubs are now unhappy with plans to play at neutral venues.

Watford, Aston Villa and Brighton are publicly opposed to the plans, with a number of teams against the idea of playing their remaining matches away from home when they could potentially be relegated.

Those clubs with lucrative stadium sponsorship deals also fear missing out on further money in such a perilous financial climate.

Meanwhile, The Independent report the FA has told Premier League clubs the season must be settled on ‘sporting merit’.

Such a scenario would ensure the season is ended by playing the remaining fixtures or deciding the outcome with a points-per-game formula with voiding the campaign still off the table.
