The Premier League could soon hold a pre-season tournament in Africa which mirrors the Asia Trophy, Richard Scudamore has said.

A biennial four-team event has taken place in Asia since 2003 and the Premier League’s executive chairman is planning to expand the format across the globe.

“Maybe we will bring one of our international tournaments [to Africa],” Scudamore told BBC Sport. “We have one in Asia and probably, at some point, Africa and America will have to feature.”

Scudamore was speaking at the BPL Live event in Cape Town, which showed the weekend’s Premier League action on giant screens in front of 35,000 football fans. Former Premier League players forming part of the event included Peter Schmeichel, Robbie Fowler, Quinton Fortune and Lucas Radebe.

“These events are like a theme park for Premier League fans,” added Scudamore. “They are good because people can come and touch and feel and be part of something – we will do more and more of these fan events.”
