Premier League postponement decision made as Newcastle gear up for Manchester United clash

The Premier League season will not be postponed despite a number of games being called off due a rising amount of positive Covid-19 cases, according to the latest reports.

The Telegraph claims the Premier League's will deal with postponements on a case-by-case basis, and that they will strongly oppose any halt to the agreed calendar.

Newcastle are one of the clubs to have not been affected by any coronavirus postponements but there are still concerns that their festive fixture list could take a hit.

A report in The Athletic revealed late on Sunday evening that clubs would discuss a potential circuit-breaker over the Christmas schedule, relating to games due to be played between 27 and 29 December.

This would have entailed postponing all Premier League games that are currently set to take place in the three-day period.

Several clubs have approached the Premier League requesting last-minute postponements due to positive cases within their squads.

Burnley's game with Aston Villa was called off two hours before kick-off while Chelsea were forced to play their game against Wolves, despite having eight positive Covid-19 cases.

In all, there were 25 postponements across the Football League in last weekend's round of fixtures; including six out of ten Premier League games.

So far there have been no frameworks laid out by the Premier League in relation to how many positive cases would warrant a postponement.
