Premier League matches 'to take place nine days before 2022 World Cup' as planned schedule is drawn up

Premier League matches are reportedly set to take place just nine days before the World Cup in Qatar after a planned schedule was drawn up by top-flight chiefs.

Proposals suggest fixtures in both the Premier League and Championship will take place on November 12 ahead of the tournament starting on November 21, report the Daily Mail.

Plans would also see the resumption of domestic action on Boxing Day, eight days after the final.

The stifling temperatures in Qatar will see the tournament held in the winter rather than over the summer.

A two-week winter break, while will be used for the first time this season, will be scrapped before returning the year after the World Cup.

The Premier League season is set to begin a week earlier and end a week later to compensate for the World Cup.

It could cause issues for clubs if players' international sides want them for pre-tournament training forcing them to potentially miss club matches.

While the situation is not ideal, there is an understanding that top leagues across Europe will all face the same issue.

A decision on the scheduling for the Champions League and Europa League will not be made by UEFA until 2021, while Leagues One and Two are expected to continue as normal.
