Premier League make Mike Dean decision after West Brom vs Liverpool controversy

Mike Dean is set to play another important role in Liverpool's push to finish in the top four this season after overseeing their victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

The referee was involved in two controversial decisions in the Hawthorns which ultimately won the match for the Reds, earning the wrath of Baggies boss Sam Allardyce in the process.

In the build-up to Liverpool 's first goal, Dean incorrectly awarded a free-kick to Jurgen Klopp 's men after blocking Fabinho 's path, with the Reds going on to equalise from the resulting attack.

He then disallowed a Kyle Bartley strike, confirmed by VAR, for offside despite the fact that the defender was onside and it was team-mate Matt Phillips standing ahead of the play, adjudged to have been interfering with Alisson's line of vision.

Despite the controversy, Dean is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday night in another game that will have huge ramifications for who finishes in the top four this season.

The Merseyside-based down official is down to take charge of Chelsea's clash with Leicester City at Stamford Bridge in what will be a rematch of Saturday's FA Cup final.

Dean will be assisted by Darren Cann and Mark Scholes with Andy Madley the fourth official. Meanwhile back at Stockley Park, Andre Marriner is the VAR with Stephen Child serving as assistant VAR.

And with Leicester and Chelsea currently sitting third and fourth in the Premier League table respectively above Liverpool, the Reds will be keeping a close eye on the action before their own penultimate match of the campaign at Burnley on Wednesday night.
