Premier League make decision on Marcus Rashford Manchester United 'goal' vs Aston Villa

Marcus Rashford has been denied a potential eleventh Premier League strike of the season — and a 17th in all competitions for club and country — as the Premier League ruled his 'goal' against Aston Villa will remain a Tom Heaton own goal.

Rashford celebrated the equaliser in United's home clash with Villa on the first day of December after directing a header at the inside of the post, which then cannoned off ex United keeper Heaton and into the net.

The goal made it 1-1 at the time after Jack Grealish's opener, with strikes from Victor Lindelof and Tyrone Mings meaning the game ended 2-2.

The Premier League confirmed to MEN Sport that United officially appealed the call to award the goal to Heaton but that the initial decision stands.

Rashford even tweeted after the game saying "didn't score at the weekend apparently" and directed a comment at Tammy Abraham with whom he's in a race for the league's golden boot, adding: "How long you been on the dubious goals panel @tammyabraham?"

Abraham replied saying: "You have to complain. Get your goal back!" Rashford then tweeted to the Premier League "Let's sort this out."

But the United striker will remain on 10 Premier League goals for the campaign.

He's six behind the league's top scorer Jamie Vardy (16), with Abraham and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 11.

Sadio Mane, Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Danny Ings are all on nine goals.
