Premier League make decision on 2019/20 season end date amid coronavirus outbreak

The Premier League and EFL have confirmed that there will be an extension to the end of the 2019/20 season.

Fixtures in both competitions have been suspended until at least the end of April due to the coronavirus outbreak, with the return date extended from the original plan of April 4.

It was confirmed earlier in the week that the Euro 2020 has been delayed by a year in order to give leagues the chance to complete their domestic season.

However, a rule by the FA states that "the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June" and "each competition shall, within the limit laid down by The FA, determine the length of its own playing season".

But in a joint statement released by The FA, Premier League, EFL and women’s professional game after Thursday’s meeting, it has been confirmed that the season will now be allowed to extend beyond that date.

“The FA’s Board has agreed for this limit to be extended indefinitely for the 2019/20 season in relation to Professional Football,” read a statement on the Premier League’s official website.

That means that the season could now be extended into the summer, which could cause contract problems for clubs should it extend past June 30th, although reports suggest that the Premier League will allow short-term contracts in order to overcome that problem.
