Premier League latest as Project Restart steps up with tackling banned during training return

Premier League players will be banned from tackling and pitches will be disinfected when clubs return to training ahead of the proposed 'Project Restart'.

The BBC report that an official protocol sent to Premier League players and managers outlining conditions for returning to training to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The measures will see pitches, corner flags, cones and goalposts sprayed down with disinfectant after each session.

Players will be tested twice per week for the virus and take a daily temperature check, while they will also be forbidden from congregating together or travelling to or from training with team-mates, the report added.

Football across England has been on hold since March with discussions ongoing over completing the season.

Daily Mail report that plans to use neutral venues - previously thought to be non-negotiable to 'Project Restart' - may now be scrapped.

Police are now reportedly open to clubs playing out the traditional home and away schedule after positive talks on Monday with the Department of Culture, Media and Sports, Sports Grounds Safety Authority and representatives from the Premier League, FA and EFL.

Standard Sport understands over half of Premier League clubs had turned against the use of neutral venues, including London's big three in Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Rather than using eight to 10 neutral stadia, based from the south coast up to Manchester, all 20 stadiums could be used with clubs are reportedly now being asked to increase the number of stewards on matchdays and foot the bill.

There remain fears that supporters will turn up at stadiums en masse despite games being played behind closed doors.

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts, National Police Chiefs’ Council Football Policing Lead, said: “Following a positive meeting between police, government and football [on Monday], we will be jointly exploring a range of options to identify a way forward, which minimises any risks to public safety and unnecessary pressure on public services, but facilitates a sensible restart to the season, to support the economic and morale benefits associated with the sport.”

Players, the Professional Footballers' Association and Government staff are reported to be meeting on Wednesday over safety issues surrounding a possible restart and PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor is hopeful a resumption can happen, if players are open-minded.

"If you're asking me, with the type of guarantees or assurances that would give confidence to the players, then (returning is) achievable," he told the Mirror.

"We've got to try it, see it if we can do it and see if we can return to some form of activity. But it's also being as careful and having as many assurances as possible that it's achievable.

"We have to be open-minded. There's a balance between what you hope can be done and what is realistic to achieve."
