Premier League identify 2019-20 season end date and start date for next season

The Premier League is aiming to start the 2020-21 season in late August or early September.

Plans are underway to restart the current campaign in June, with Manchester United players due to report for training at Carrington on Wednesday.

The remaining 92 Premier League fixtures will be played behind closed doors and chief executive Richard Masters is now hopeful of finishing this season in July.

"There will come a point when next season becomes difficult to schedule. We are not at that point yet," Masters said. "The June return and July finish leaves time for a break for other competitions to be completed and start the season towards the end of August or very early September.

"Obviously what we want to do is ensure the season is completed in a way which preserves other competitions, but also preserves our ability to start and deliver 38 match rounds next season in a proper calendar."

"Given we are trying to get the season away in a slightly truncated situation, we may look at some interesting scheduling options. Nothing we can confirm yet, but we've got to make it work for everybody."

The Premier League traditionally starts in the second weekend of August and clubs are braced for a quick turn-around, rather than the usual three-month gap between seasons.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office has advised British nationals against 'all but essential international travel' and pre-season tours have been all but scrapped.

The Premier League confirmed on Monday clubs had 'unanimously' voted to return to training this week. In their statement, the Premier League said: "Premier League shareholders today voted unanimously to return to small-group training from tomorrow afternoon, the first step towards restarting the Premier League, when safe to do so.

"Step One of the Return to Training Protocol enables squads to train while maintaining social distancing. Contact training is not yet permitted.

"This first stage has been agreed in consultation with players, managers, Premier League club doctors, independent experts and the government.

"Strict medical protocols of the highest standard will ensure everyone returns to training in the safest environment possible.

"The health and wellbeing of all participants is the Premier League’s priority, and the safe return to training is a step-by-step process.

"Full consultation will now continue with players, managers, clubs, the PFA and LMA as protocols for full-contact training are developed."

The Premier League was suspended on March 13 and the last match it staged was between Leicester and Aston villa on March 9.
