Premier League great issues verdict on Leeds United penalty incident and Rodrigo debut

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has issued his verdict on the match-winning penalty awarded to Liverpool in the dramatic opening day clash against Leeds United.

The Whites played their part in a 4-3 thriller at Anfield, which was only settled after Rodrigo's clumsy challenge on Fabinho earned the hosts a late penalty which was dispatched by Mohamed Salah for his hat-trick.

That overshadowed what was an otherwise routine debut for Leeds' new record-signing and there will certainly be a sense of what might have been.

Wright issues no direct fault to Rodrigo though, stating it was something that he himself would likely have done during his own playing days.

“He was very sharp all game. This is the penalty, I just felt for Rodrigo.

"He’s a striker, it’s the kind of thing that I would probably do," he told BBC's Match of the Day.

“I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed for Leeds, they only had the three shots on target and they score with them, but they were so unlucky today.

“Look at Firmino there showing the form that he showed last season at Anfield, but Leeds were magnificent today.”
