Premier League fans face £14.95 price to stream individual matches on new PPV service

Premier League supporters are facing a fee of £14.95 per match to stream live games not selected for television coverage.

Since the restart of last season in June, every match in the Premier League has been made available via Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon or free-to-air coverage on the BBC.

But the Premier League have grown agitated at essentially giving away their product for free since lockdown.

With fans still unable to attend live matches, Premier League clubs are facing continued losses of millions of pounds in revenue and broadcasters do not want to pay an increased fee for extra rights to continue to cover all the games.

The idea is said to be spawned by the Premier League and has earned support from the 14-club majority that is required to pass through the motion, as well as the broadcasters.

Crucially, the revenue generated by the PPV streams will go directly to the clubs themselves, rather than to the networks, and should help to counteract the lost money from lack of fans inside the stadium.

However, it is football supporters who will feel the pinch of the new structure as MEN Sport understands that a fee of £14.95 per game will be the price for the streaming service.

That is £4.95 higher than the EFL’s iFollow, although that regularly attracts criticism for poor service and limited camera angles, which the Premier League will be determined to avoid upon launch.

Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle United a week on Saturday will be among the first pay-per-view games on Sky Box Office, with the fixture kicking off at 8pm.
