Premier League eye provisional start date for next season as League Cup faces the chop

The Premier League is eyeing a start date for next season of September 12.

The current campaign has massively overran due to the postponement of football and will finish months later than originally planned.

League chiefs have suggested three different start dates  - August 22, August 29 and the seemingly favourable September date.

September 5 is not a possible date because it falls on an international break.

Authorities were looking to start the season earlier with the campaign needing to conclude by May 16 due to the rearranged Euros next summer.

But the possibility of both Manchester clubs and Wolves being involved in delayed European competitions made that impossible.

The Premier League could start on September 12 (PA)

No formal decision was made, according to the Sun, during the latest video call involving shareholders.

Clubs prefer the September start dates because it raises the chances of fans being allowed into stadiums which increases revenue and brings back a sense of home advantage.

The congested season though could put pay to the Carabao Cup and FA Cup replays.

Both have been the subject of debate for years with England one of the few countries to have two cup competitions.

Man City have won the Carabao Cup for the past three years (PA)

FA Cup replays meanwhile have been partially scrapped but may have to go all together.

The revised calendar may present broadcast issues for authorities however with the current deal dictating that 34 weekends of action must be played.

With a September 12 start date the best possible scenario is 32 weekends.

The FA and the EFL may be look to be financialky recompensed, with Wembley chiefs facing a headache if they are forced to give up the replays having already included them in broadcast deals.

The seasons start date is set to be finalised at the next meeting in late July.
