Premier League explain why Heung-Min Son was sent off after horror injury to Andre Gomes

The Premier League have confirmed why Son Heung-Min was sent off for his role in Andre Gomes' suspected broken ankle.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward appeared to trip the Everton midfielder as he collided into Serge Aurier.

The incident caused a lengthy delay to proceedings on Merseyside, with 12 minutes of stoppage time added on.

Son, who was visibly distraught after the incident , was initially shown a yellow card before referee Martin Atkinson quickly decided to upgrade that to a red card.

Fan Reaction to Gomes injury

The reaction of both sets of players, who were all visibly upset by the severity of Gomes' injury seemed to cause Atkinson's decision to dismiss Son and the Premier League have confirmed it was not sent to VAR to review the decision.

After taking in the dramatic events, many have questioned why Son was shown a straight red card, as he appeared to only trip Gomes, despite the impact on his injury.

However, the Premier League explained what happened in a statement: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."

Cenk Tosun equalised for Everton to rescue a point for the Toffees in added-on time, cancelling out Dele Alli's opener, although Goodison Park was left with a very sombre feeling despite the last-minute leveller.
