Premier League explain Roberto Firmino VAR decision - by saying Liverpool forward's armpit was offside

The Premier League have explained the VAR decision that saw Roberto Firmino have a goal ruled out at Aston Villa - by saying the Liverpool forward's armpit was offside.

Firmino thought he'd equalised at Villa Park after Trezeguet had opened the scoring for the hosts , only for the linesman to raise his flag.

But Liverpool fans were left fuming when VAR confirmed the decision - despite several stills showing Firmino looking level.

A tweet at half-time read: "Liverpool's Roberto Firmino was flagged offside before putting the ball in the net against Aston Villa and the decision was confirmed by VAR.

"The red line signifies Firmino and was aligned to his armpit, which was marginally ahead of the last Villa defender."

Jon Moss is the referee in charge of the game, with Martin Atkinson - who infuriated fans when Liverpool faced Manchester United at Old Trafford - in charge of VAR.
