Premier League explain Richarlison VAR decision as Michael Keane incident linked to Manchester City

The Premier League have confirmed Richarlison's penalty appeal against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday was checked by VAR.

The Brazilian appeared to have his shirt pulled from a corner during the second-half but neither referee Andy Madley or the Video Assistant Referee believed the contact warranted a spot-kick.

And the ECHO has since learned that the reason for the award of the highly controversial penalty against Everton - defender Michael Keane was penalised for an apparent foot trod on striker Aaron Connolly - was linked to an incident at Manchester City earlier in the campaign.

PGMOL chief Mike Riley confirmed in September that the failure not to award David Silva a penalty in their trip to Bournemouth was among four incorrect calls made by VAR during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Silva was felled by a trod from Jefferson Lerma and Riley, a month into the season, asserted the new technology - and officials that man it - are 'constantly learning'.

He did, however, assert at the time that a 'clear and obvious error' must be made for the video assistant to be utilised.

"Of the four rounds of matches, there have been some really good examples where we have intervened," Riley told Sky Sports.

"Six times where VAR has advised the referee and we have got a better result.

"There are four incidents where VAR didn't intervene. They were about the judgement of VAR and the processes we adopt.

"It is a combination of factors, we are constantly learning. A judgement decision, a process mistake, others it was looking at not disrupting the game.

"The judgement should have been there was a clear and obvious error.

"One of the good things of the first four matches has been the quality level of performance of referees."
