The Premier League have confirmed why Son Heung-min was sent off for his role in Andre Gomes' suspected broken ankle.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward slid in to make a tackle on the Everton midfielder, who then collided with Serge Aurier. The impact left Gomes with a suspected broken ankle, with Goodison Park shaken by the incident.
A lengthy delay to proceedings on Merseyside followed, as Gomes received treatment on the field. The 26-year-old was then stretchered off the pitch and rushed to hospital.
Son, who was visibly distraught after the incident, was initially shown a yellow card by referee Martin Atkinson - who then quickly decided to upgrade that to a red card.
The reaction of both sets of players and severity of Gomes' injury seemed to cause Atkinson's decision to dismiss Son, and the Premier League have confirmed that the decision was not sent to VAR to review.
After taking in the dramatic events, many have questioned why Son was shown a straight red card, as he appeared to only trip Gomes, despite the impact on his injury.
However, the Premier League explained what happened in a statement: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."
Cenk Tosun equalised for Everton to rescue a point for the Toffees in added-on time, cancelling out Dele Alli's opener.
However, Goodison Park was left with a very sombre feeling despite the last-minute leveller.
