Premier League emergency meeting on coronavirus: Clubs to meet on Thursday to discuss 2019/20 season options

The Premier League is due to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday with all 20 clubs to discuss the fate of the 2019/20 season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Standard Sport understands that the meeting will be held over conference call give government guidance on avoiding non-essential travel and practising social distancing, and is scheduled for the morning.

Premier League matches had initially been due to go ahead last weekend despite growing concerns over the global spread of Covid-19 - but Mikel Arteta's positive diagnosis last Thursday evening led to an emergency meeting on Friday morning.

Following the Arsenal head coach's Covid-19 diagnosis, Chelsea confirmed in the early hours of Friday morning that Callum Hudson-Odoi has also contracted the virus.

Later that morning, Premier League clubs agreed to postpone fixtures until the weekend of April 4 at the earliest.

Top-flight clubs are due to meet again on Thursday, March 19 to discuss potential options on how to approach the culmination of the 2019/20 season.

Uefa has announced that European clubs have pledged to try and finish the current season by the end of June - assuming that resuming football in any capacity is a possibility before then - in part due to the fact that players' contracts usually run until that point.

As the UK government continues to report growing numbers of positive Covid-19 tests across the country with each passing day, there is no telling as to when the football season will be able to continue in any capacity.

It looks unlikely at this point that the Premier League season will resume by April 4, which would put further pressure on organisers to fit in games - especially with Champions League and Europa League matches still to complete.

With Uefa 2020 moved back until 2021, June could be a busy month for top-flight clubs with the race to complete the season before July - with games in empty stadiums a very real possibility.

The options likely to be discussed by clubs during the emergency meeting are: pledge to finish the season by June 30 if possible; declare the season null and void; end the season with the table as it is; play-offs for the title, Europe, and relegation; wait as long as is needed to finish this season.

It is unlikely that clubs will make a decision beyond pledging to attempt to finish the current season if circumstances allow, particularly given that a number of the available options would likely be met with multiple legal challenges from clubs currently battling relegation, or on the verge of a financial windfall due to European qualification.

Liverpool are just two wins away from being confirmed as champions, and though they are unlikely to be caught in the title race as it stands, awarding them the trophy now would also potentially open up legal issues for other clubs up and down the division.
