The Premier League has denied claims by Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino that the English top flight is set to release a statement cancelling the remainder of the campaign.
Udinese, who play in Italy’s Serie A, are owned by Giampaolo Pozzo, whose son Gino owns Watford FC.
Speaking to Sportitalia, Marino said the Premier League would follow Belgium’s top flight, who confirmed last week they would abandon the current campaign and crown Club Brugge champions amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“The Belgian Federation has already sanctioned the end of their league, despite the threats of sanctions from Uefa,” Marino said.
“In England, the Premier League is about to release a similar statement, because the situation there is becoming very, very serious.”
However, a spokesperson for the Premier League told The Independent that Marino’s claims were incorrect.
In Belgium, decisions were not made on the relegation places or European spots.
“I frankly just hope we can enjoy football again after the coronavirus,” Marino added.
“It doesn’t matter how long it takes, we need to get out of this danger zone.
“I am worried for the next seasons, not the old one.”
