Premier League decision that will affect Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham amid Man United update

Premier League clubs are now set to test daily for Covid-19, with plans set to be approved at a shareholders' meeting later today.

That is according to The Athletic, who say that the 20 top-flight clubs have now been told to conduct lateral flow testing on a daily basis, as well as PCR tests twice a week.

With the threat of the new Omicron variant, that is said to spread at a quicker rate than previous strains, Premier League clubs are now taking action in order to keep the competition going. The plan is set to be approved on Tuesday when Premier League shareholders meet.

The news comes less than 24 hours after the Premier League confirmed that 42 new positive cases of Covid among players and staff in the top-flight. This weekly figure is the most since May last year.

A statement from the Premier League read: "The league can today confirm that between Monday, 6 December and Sunday, 12 December, 3,805 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19. Of these, there were 42 new positive cases."

Manchester United's clash with Brentford, that was meant to be played on Tuesday evening, was postponed late on Monday night due to an outbreak of the virus at the Old Trafford club.

United released this statement on the matter: "Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club requested the match to be rearranged.

"The Premier League Board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors."

United are not the only club in the Premier League to be hit with an outbreak of Covid, with Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton, Leicester City and Norwich City all having confirmed cases recently.
