Premier League could 'explore' radical plan to play games in China in a bid to finish season

The Premier League and its clubs could be set to explore the idea of playing games in China in a bid to finish the season.

Most clubs in the top-flight are desperate to finish the campaign as they don’t want to miss out on around £762million in broadcasting revenue.

But according to a report in The Athletic, senior figures at the Premier League are becoming  increasingly fearful that they have nowhere left to turn to resume the season in this country.

As a result, one club is believed to have suggested whether it is worth exploring if the season could be finished abroad as an alternative.

This has led to China, which is on the road to recovery after suffering an outbreak of Covid-19 earlier this year, being mooted as the destination of choice to play the remaining games.

The report claims that moving the top-flight from England would be a way to decrease strain on NHS staff and free up stadiums to be used by emergency services and local authorities.

“The country that keeps getting proposed is China. It just doesn’t make any sense. It is a crazy idea and I think it will get firmly rejected,” one club’s chief executive told the publication.

“If we were to pick up the Premier League and move it to another part of the world right now we’d get absolutely slaughtered. Somebody accused us the other day of being in a bubble.

“I feel a little bit like they are right at the moment – even though I am not, I can see why people think we are.”

“It’s just a waste of energy. Let’s just say we all want to start the league and life,” another Premier League club director said of the idea of playing games in China.

“Unfortunately only God and the pandemic can make this decision. And it does not look likely.”
