Premier League confirms VAR error in Manchester United game vs Aston Villa

The Premier League has confirmed that VAR made an error in awarding Manchester United a penalty in Thursday night's victory over Aston Villa.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring in the 3-0 victory over the relegation-threatened side from the penalty spot, putting United on course for their fifth consecutive victory and boosting their top four chances.

The Portuguese midfielder was judged to have been fouled by Ezri Konsa but replays showed the United man may have been the one to commit a foul, as he trod on the defender's leg. It left Villa boss Dean Smith incensed and he blasted the "disgraceful decision" in his post-match inerview.

VAR did look at the decision from on-field referee Jon Moss but did not overturn the call - something the Premier League has since admitted was a mistake in an official statement.

BBC presenter Dan Walker said on Match of the Day that the Premier League's match centre had confirmed that the penalty decisions should have been overturned by a VAR check.

"It was the wrong decision. It should have been overturned by VAR but wasn't and should actually have been a foul on Konsa," the BBC was told.

It came as part of a forgetful night for the technology, as it was confirmed that Southampton's penalty against Everton should not have been awarded and Tottenham should have had a penalty in their goalless draw with Bournemouth.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed it was the right call, however. The United boss said: "I think the boy, he's done a Zidane turn and the boy has stuck his leg out and Bruno has landed on him.

"If I try to jump away from someone and I land on someone as they try to tackle me, it's a penalty so for me it's a pen."
