Premier League clubs with larger squads have been handed a boost with teams able to name nine substitutes on the bench next season.
The rule first came into effect as the Premier League returned for Project Restart in June 2020, before being voted through again mid-way through the last campaign.
There had been thoughts that clubs would revert back to 18-man squads this season, but the Premier League has confirmed the new rule will remain in place..
Clubs will still be limited to making three subs per game, with some teams having previously pushed for the five changes that were permitted at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
Having released their handbook ahead of the 2021/22 season, the Premier League said: “In any League Match a Club may include in its team sheet up to nine substitute Players of whom not more than three may take part in the League Match.
“In addition to the three substitutions permitted by [the Premier League], each Club shall also be permitted to utilise up to two ‘concussion substitutes’ and/or two ‘additional substitutes’ (as appropriate) from those substitutes listed on the team sheet.”
This makes the Premier League different from the other English Leagues, with EFL clubs only able to name a seven-man bench as their season got underway at the weekend.
