Premier League confirms fixture 'intention' ahead of Everton and Liverpool games

The Premier League has confirmed its "intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible" amid increasing Covid concerns.

A number of games this week have already been called off due to virus outbreaks at various clubs.

In the last hour, it was confirmed that Manchester United vs Brighton on Saturday will now be postponed.

As it stands, there were no specific issues relating to Liverpool's game against Newcastle United this evening.

Everton's trip to Chelsea tonight is also set to go ahead currently - despite a number of coronavirus cases in the London outfit's squad.

In a statement this afternoon, the Premier League said: "It is with regret that this is the fourth Premier League fixture to have been postponed in the past week.

"While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks, it is the League’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible. The health and wellbeing of all concerned remains our priority."

The governing body also outlined how decisions are made with regards to delaying individual games.

The statement continued: "The Board assesses applications to postpone matches on a case-by-case basis, based on existing rules and COVID-19 postponement guidance issued to all clubs.

"It will assess a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of the COVID-19 outbreak at the club; and the ability of the players to safely prepare for and play the match. The Board must also consider the wider risks to the opposition and other people the club may come into contact with.

"In light of the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, the Premier League has reintroduced Emergency Measures. These include protocols such as more frequent testing, wearing face coverings while indoors, observing social distancing and limiting treatment time."

But growing fears about the viability of the football calendar have led to calls for a 'circuit breaker' pause to allow the league to regroup.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants this weekend's full round of domestic fixtures to be postponed to "break the chain" on the current Covid crisis.

In a press conference earlier today, Frank said he had already spoken to Premier League officials and other top flight managers about the situation.

He said: "Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems.

"To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain."

Whether that would be enough given the wider UK situation, however, is another debate.

Health chief Dr Jenny Harries has warned that rapid spread of Omicron will lead to a "staggering" number of Covid cases in the coming days.

She said: "The numbers that we see on data over the next few days will be quite staggering compared to the rate of growth that we've seen in cases for previous variants.

"The real potential risk here - and I would underline that because we are still learning a lot about the variant - is in relation to its severity, clinical severity, and therefore whether those cases turn into severe disease, hospitalisations and deaths."
