Premier League confirm six positive coronavirus tests

The Premier League have confirmed that six players or staff from three separate clubs have tested positive for COVID-19.

Over the past few days a total of 748 members of staff, including members of the first team squad, were tested at 19 Premier League clubs in anticipation for a proposed return to training. The remaining club is expected to complete testing today.

On Monday, it was revealed that sides in the top division were permitted to return to small group training on Tuesday afternoon, with social distancing still in effect and no contact allowed.

As part of this return, wide-range testing must be carried out and the results of that first round of tests have now been revealed.

A statement from the organisation read: "The Premier League can today confirm that on Sunday 17 May and Monday 18 May, 748 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, six have tested positive from three clubs.

"Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.

"The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public in this way after each round of testing."

Members of both the Everton and Liverpool squad will begin to return to their respective training grounds from Wednesday.

On Monday, all 20 clubs unanimously decided upon the first stage of the "Return To Training Protocol".

The top division has been suspended in the UK since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, with regular discussions taking place since then on how to deal with the remaining matches of the 2019/20 campaign.
