Premier League confirm positive COVID tests as Newcastle battle to contain outbreak

The Premier League have confirmed a rise in positive COVID tests as Newcastle continue to battle to get their outbreak under control.

United have had a number of COVID cases and the training ground remains closed after Public Health England's intervention at the start of last week.

It has been shut for 11 days and it's understood that several first team players have tested positive for the virus. The squad has been given instructions to work on fitness at home but as ChronicleLive reported earlier today, tests on Monday were conducted with the hope of reopening the facility.

The Premier League have confirmed 14 new positives over the last week, with a number understood to be at Newcastle. No names have been released with the club asking for their identities to be respected.

Their statement read: "The Premier League can today confirm that between Monday 30 November and Sunday 6 December, 1,483 players and Club staff were tested for COVID-19.

"Of these, there were 14 new positive tests.

"Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.

"The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

"No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing."

There's still no definitive decision on United's game against West Brom on Saturday, which was the subject of speculation on Monday.
