Premier League confirm permanent matchday squad change with substitutes

Premier League clubs are now allowed to include nine substitutes on a permanent basis.

Clubs were permitted to name 20-man matchday squads for the restart of the 2019-20 season last June before benches were reduced back down to seven players for the start of 2020-21.

However, clubs voted in favour of increasing benches back to nine players in December of last year for the rest of the season and the Premier League handbook for 2021-22 has clarified it will stay at nine substitutes.

In the handbook, the ruling under substitute players reads: "Subject to Rule L.28A, in any league match a club may include in its teamsheet up to nine substitute players of whom not more than three may take part in the league match subject to the conditions set out in Law 3 of the Laws of the Game."

Clubs can still only make three substitutions, as well as up to two concussion substitutes.

The Premier League only increased benches to seven substitutes in 2008-09 and Serie A clubs are still permitted up to 12 substitutes.

Premier League clubs competing in Europe are able to name 23-man matchday squads.
