Premier League confirm one new case from latest round of COVID-19 testing

The Premier League has announced that one person has tested positive for coronavirus following the last round of testing.

A total of 1,213 people from the league's 20 clubs were tested for COVID-19 and just one person has tested positive for the virus.

Following on from the latest round of test results that were revealed on Saturday evening, this is an increase of one positive test, as not a single positive test was reported in the latest round of testing results.

A statement released by the Premier League read: "The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 8 June and Tuesday 9 June, 1,213 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, one has tested positive.

The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency. No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing."

Though it is an increase of positive tests from the last round of testing, just one positive test result offers encouragement that the Premier League campaign can safely resume next Wednesday, as Sheffield United travel to Aston Villa and Manchester City welcome Arsenal to the Etihad Stadium.

During the first round of testing on May 17 and 18, a total of six positive tests were confirmed from three different clubs.

In the second round of testing, which took place on May 19 to 22, the number decreased to two positive tests before slightly increasing to four from two clubs on May 25 and 26.

Zero tested positive on May 28 and 29.

The individual who has tested positive for the virus has not been named and will now self isolate in line with Premier League rules.
