Premier League confirm key date for 2020/21 season start

The Premier League have confirmed the weekend that the 2020/21 season will kick off later this year.

Manchester City are attempting to seal the runners-up spot this time having given up the chase as a relentless Liverpool team storm towards the title. Manchester United are hoping to join them in a top-four battle but are locked in battle with teams including Chelsea, Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United in the race for fourth place.

England's top-flight will be entering it's 29th season since the Premier League was formed in August and the Premier League has confirmed that fixtures for the 2020/21 season will begin on the weekend of Saturday August 8.

The 2019/20 season began on Friday, August 9 in 2019 so the 2020/21 start date is in keeping with the competition's general trend.

With the European Championships this summer, some players could have less than a month between the competition's final, on July 12, and the start of the new Premier League season.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters spoke this week about the demands of fixture congestion after recent complaints from managers and the decision from Jurgen Klopp to play an Under-23 team in an FA Cup replay with Shrewsbury.

"We need to listen to players and managers about fixture congestion, because the demands on players are getting greater,” he said.
