Premier League confirm chairman Gary Hoffman to leave role

The Premier League have confirmed that Gary Hoffman will step down as chair of the competition at the end of January 2022.

Hoffman was only appointed in April 2020 after Claudia Arney served as acting chair following Richard Scudamore's departure in 2018.

However, it is believed that Hoffman came under increasing pressure from top-flight clubs over Newcastle United's takeover by a Saudi Arabian-based consortium last month.

It has recently been claimed that in the immediate aftermath of the deal being completed clubs complained over how the buyers, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and the billionaire Reuben brothers, passed the owners' and directors' test.

While Hoffman was also allegedly criticised for his knowledge of talks about the failed European Super League project.

Rumours began to surface on Tuesday that Hoffman was set to step down from his role before it was confirmed earlier today that his tenure would end at the end of January 2022.

“Gary Hoffman will step down as Chair of the Premier League at the end of January 2022,” a statement from the Premier League read.

“The Premier League is grateful to Gary for his committed service. He has led the League during the most challenging period in its history and leaves it in a stronger position than ever.

“The process of appointing a new Chair will begin immediately.”

While Hoffman said on his exit: "It has been a privilege to lead the Premier League through the last two seasons - when the spirit of English football has been more important than ever.

"Now, I have decided the time is right for me to stand aside to allow new leadership to steer the League through its next exciting phase."
