Premier League clubs warned by lawmakers VAR will take 10 years to perfect

Premier League clubs have been warned that it will take ten years to fully understand how VAR works.

The technology has had a bumpy start to life in the top flight of English football after a number of controversial decisions over the first two weekends including in both of Manchester City's matches .

The International FA Board (IFAB) has already reportedly decided to review the way VAR is used for offsides, and now the new handball rule introduced for this season is under scrutiny after two high-profile incidents .

Having waited longer than other leagues before introducing the technology to "avoid being a guinea pig", the Premier League has found the start of its new season dominated by talk of it.

And that may continue for a long time yet, with the VAR concept described as still being in its infancy.

“The Premier League was observing the development of VAR for a long time because it is one of - if not the - most important league competition in the world and the most viewed competition in the world," IFAB secretary Lukas Brud told VAR From Perfect .

“They didn’t want to be part of the experimental phase and wanted to avoid being a guinea pig.

“They have taken their time to use it and wanted to see how it works.

“The VAR concept is still at the beginning. We talked to other sports and everyone told us this is a 10-year project until people really understand how it works.”
